3D Laser Scanning

3D Scanning

3D laser scanning is a method that digitally captures the shape of a physical object using a laser. This process does not involve making contact with the object mitigating the concern of damaging it. After scanning is complete, the outline of the object appears digitally with multiple points. These points measure the exact distance between curves, bends, details, creating a "point cloud". This "point cloud" allows us to reconstruct the object and scale it larger or smaller when manipulating it on the computer. The scanning process can be quick, gathering up to 750,000 precise points per second.

Here at Met-L-Flo, we utilize 3D laser scanning to help create a multitude of physical prototypes, jigs or fixtures, fused deposition modeling (FDM) prototypes, selective laser sintering (SLS) prototypes, and much more.

Professional 3D Laser Scanning

3D laser scanning happens before the 3D printing process begins if you have the digital design or 3D model ready. If you don't have a design ready, we can help develop an idea and make alterations to it. Adjustments can also be made to a current design.

3D laser scanning is also used during the inspection process. Once new parts are created with the CAD data made from the original scans, they are scanned to see if their point clouds, match the original geometry. If point clouds match then parts are within tolerance, but even if they are slightly off then this scan will catch it.

Fused Deposition Modeling is a great example of 3D laser scanning. FDM is a process that heats and extrudes a thin filament of thermoplastic forming parts layer by layer. Three Dimensional scannings allows for better accuracy and the ability to adjust the size of the part that is going to be printed over the previous layer.
