Over-Molding is a highly customizable process that looks different for each application. Two Shot molding is the process of adding material on top of a part. This process is used with others such as 3D printing processes, Castings in general, and other processes as well. This allows for the use of multiple materials as well as the addition or changing of top layer features.
While many clients utilize Over-Molding for adding features onto a part or to utilize multiple materials, some clients use Over-Molding to protect primary pieces. This is done by having the primary component produced and then having a secondary material cast over top. The second material acts as a shield to protect the primary component. This is also referred to as encapsulation.
